Orthodontics the Low Force Way: The Damon Systemby Dr. Dayle Hartgerink
|
The Damon System is a whole new way of treating patients who require orthodontics. Conventional treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth, strong and sometimes excessive orthodontic forces, and/or the more frequent use of palatal expanders to make space. This approach often takes longer, is often uncomfortable, and can leave a narrower arch and a flat facial profile. Of course, desired results should include both achieving the best facial balance possible in conjunction with conventional treatment goals. The Damon System offers a unique passive mechanical system that permits low forces to work in conjunction with the muscles of the face, tongue, bone and tissue. Low forces minimize discomfort and greatly increase the types of cases that can be treated without high-force arch expansion or extractions.
It is a revolutionary approach to orthodontic treatment due to a unique orthodontic bracket which is attached to the teeth. Traditional braces use wires or elastics to hold the wire in the bracket. The Damon bracket utilizes a sliding mechanism over the bracket that allows the wire to be secured to the bracket without the need for ties and the added friction and forces they require.

When utilizing the Damon System, Dr. Hartgerink can treat with far less extractions of teeth to achieve beautiful results because the Damon brackets allow her to work more conservatively within the normal biological range of the body’s accepted forces.
Damon brackets are beneficial for patients of all ages. Adults benefit because of lower forces and faster treatment when compared to traditional braces. Damon brackets are also indicated for patients with periodontal (gum) problems due to the light forces they deliver. The idea is that treatment forces should be just high enough to stimulate healthy tooth movement without putting stress on the blood vessels in the surrounding tooth supporting structures. By applying light continuous forces throughout every phase of treatment we are able to achieve healthy, comfortable and efficient tooth movement. As a result our patients’ treatments can often be finished in less time, with fewer visits and far less discomfort than ever before.
